Dr. Nair, founder of the Nair’s Hospital, started his medical career from the prestigious Kottayam Medical College, Kerala in 1972 and continued to pursue his senior internship at the world renowned Christian Medical College, Vellore before joining the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences(NIMHANS), Bangalore for his post-graduation (MD) in Psychiatry.
Hailing from the small town of Evoor in Alleppy District, he envisioned of establishing a centre where mental disorders were considered not as a stigma laden illness requiring custodial care but as any other ailment that required humane care and medicine. To that end, in 1982, he laid down the foundation stone of this institute that has now successfully completed 40 years of patient care and has emerged as a reputed institution, a landmark, well known across the country.
A voracious orator, Dr. Nair still continues to capture the attention of the young generation of psychiatrists with his intriguing ideas in newer modes of therapy in the field of mental illness. Dr. Nair has over 40 years of experience as a practicing psychiatrist, during which he has provided services to thousands of patients as well as to several voluntary organizations. He has also been providing expertise for research to universities and institutions. He has done a pioneering research study on ‘Biological Parameters of Depression’ and was associated with the Biotechnology Department of Cochin University on its Research on Neurotransmitters. Dr. Nair was also associated with the Study on Genetic Aspects of Drug Metabolism in Schizophrenia conducted by Rajiv Gandhi Centre of Biotechnology, Thiruvananthapuram. Among the voluntary works undertaken by Dr. Nair, the free professional support he has been offering since 1994 to the Abandoned Mentally Sick Persons at the Rehabilitation Settlement, Palluruthy, Kochi has received wide acknowledgement.
He is also an active member of psychiatry forums and participates in various national and international psychiatry conferences.
