Myths and facts about clinical psychiatry

Myth - “Psychiatric medications are only for sleep, they make you drowsy”
Fact - Psychotropic medications are for different purposes like reducing anxiety, improving mood, etc. Not all are sedative. There are plenty of nonsedative options which are extremely helpful depending on the situation.
Myth - Psychiatric medications once started cannot be stopped
Fact - There are international standard guidelines that determine the duration of treatment. Certain illnesses may require a long duration of treatment. Not all psychiatric illnesses need long-term medication.
Myth - Psychiatric patients are violent
Fact - Psychiatry encompasses illnesses like Autism, ADHD, Dementia, Learning disability, and anxiety disorders also, where there is no significant violence/ agitation. There may be instances of agitation in severe psychiatric illnesses.
Myth - Inpatient care is only for “violent” patients.
Fact - Your mental health professional may also advise inpatient care in instances like a poor response to outpatient treatment, suicidal tendency, diagnostic clarification, optimization of medication, respite stay, etc.
